The Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design at the Royal College of Art, London, has a vacancy for a Research Associate to work three days per week on a year-long design project, in association with the University of York’s department of Sociology.

The project is an ESRC funded project entering its 3rd year. Architects are often employed to create buildings where care takes place although they are not health and social care professionals. This project has involved ethnographic research into the work of architects who design and develop buildings for health and social care, focusing on design for care in later life. A better understanding of their ways of working and their contribution to the design and delivery of care therefore offers an important path for research.

The project will be joined by a researcher from the RCA investigating the following research brief from a design perspective -

Buildings in the Making: A Sociological Exploration of Architecture in the Context of Health and Social Care.

The project aims to develop a sociological understanding of the day to day work of architects; to cast light on the way knowledge about health and social care is engineered into buildings designed for care; to understand the challenges and complexities associated with design in the health and social care sector; and to design and develop novel ways to disseminate and share findings with various audiences (e.g. architects and designers, people working in the social care sector, policy makers and the public).

The Research Associate will contribute intellectually to the study and will bring designer perspective/skillsets to the communication and dissemination of outputs. Potential candidates should have a first degree in a relevant discipline and a masters qualification in Architecture, Communication or Design along with a proven interest in person-centred design and design ethnography. It is essential applicants have knowledge and/or an interest in design for later life. The appointed person will have the ability to work flexibly as part of a multidisciplinary team and work well amongst different stake-holder groups

The successful candidate will be employed as a Research Associate on a 12 month fixed-term contract, working 3-days per week, as part of the Age and Diversity research space at the HHCD. Salary will be £18,409 (including London weighting) working three days per week.

Interviews are likely to take place on Thursday 5 October 2017.
