We are looking for an experienced, adaptable, dynamic, highly motivated and outcome-focused person to work with our Making technical support team at the Royal College of Art. This team delivers a wide variety of making and digital making activities for our Graduate Diploma students. These are areas where students are sketch model making, assembling, experimenting and developing physical 3D concepts using materials such as wood, metal and plastic.

The day job as a Lead Technical Instructor:

  • Take a lead in the provision of technical instruction, support, advice and demonstrations, online and in a workshop or studio environment
  • Managing a team 
  • Supporting the growth of the Technical facilities that allow students to explore and develop work within the experimental stages of their research
  • Continual learning as part of a dynamic multi disciplinary team
  • Assist students and staff in problem solving and finding technical solutions
  • Maintain specialist equipment and safety and keep accurate records 

What you will need to have:

  • Team management experience 
  • Significant specialist knowledge in relevant processes, techniques and skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organisational, time management and planning skills with the ability to prioritise as appropriate
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent user focus and a flexible approach
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations and confidential matters and to resolve problems when they arise
  • The ability to use initiative and work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety issues and Risk Assessment procedures


Closing date for applications: Sunday 22nd May Midnight. If shortlisted the zoom assessment will be the 27th May, the panel interview 1st June.

The Recruitment Process:

Lead Technical Instructors at the RCA, need to excel in four key areas; Technical Knowledge, Helping Others, Administrative Processes and Management. Please use stage four of the application process to tell us about your experience in these areas and evidence your ability to perform in each. 

Please note that your experience does not have to be directly linked to the creative industries or education. We are keen to hear about any experiences you may have had, particularly if you feel they have influenced your ability to perform in this role.

As part of your application you may be invited to an initial assessment on Zoom, a technical test and formal interview. We estimate this recruitment process to be complete within a 2 month period.
