We are looking for an experienced, adaptable and highly motivated person to work in our new SNAP Visualisation Lab at the Royal College of Art.

The SNAP Vis Lab is a multimodal immersive environment. Offering double height, three sided stereoscopic capable projection, a spatial tracking array and high quality sound, the space will allow for large scale visuals, virtual environments, and data analysis. Comprising audio, projection, and tracking hardware and software for multimedia playback and CAD conversion, the space will support research staff to engage with partners.

Within the lab there is -

  • A 65m2 double-height space with three sided projection, minimal light and sound pollution and a control room.  
  • Dedicated solid-state, automatically digitally corrected array of stereoscopic capable projectors.
  • A spatial tracking array offers a tracking volume targeted to support VR interactions and dynamic viewing of applications.
  • An immersive audio system.
  • Software that supports multimedia content playback and VR.

Working as the local technical support in this new Research & Knowledge Exchange focused space, the role will provide specialist technical support for large scale multimedia projection, virtual environments and audio delivery. There will be training and development opportunities on the software and equipment for the most suitable candidate. 

The day job as SNAP Visualisation Lab manager

  • Working closely with academic staff and external partners to support project development within and for the SNAP lab.
  • Designing workflows, user guides and safety protocols for the new laboratory.
  • Training research staff on new equipment and processes.
  • Setting up and running tests and experiments on behalf of academic staff or commercial clients.
  • Ordering consumables and planning maintenance of equipment.
  • Peer-to-peer learning with other technical specialists and academic staff.
  • Regular problem solving and playing an active part in the lab’s development.
  • Support the Labs progression by engaging in both personal and technological development.

 What you will need to have:

  • Significant knowledge and experience of managing multi-user spaces, including equipment management, software updates, and user configuration.
  • Experience of developing project briefs, scope and resource requirements. 
  • Experience of delivering virtual environment projects and at least one games development platform (such as Unreal or Unity).
  • Experience of working with 3D models within visualisation and virtual environment projects 
  • Experience in processes and techniques related to large scale visualisation. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Excellent organisational, time management and planning skills with the ability to prioritise as appropriate.

The Recruitment Process: 

This is a full time and fixed term role (2 years) working at our State-of-the-Art facility at Battersea.
