The Royal College of Art is the only entirely postgraduate institution of university status devoted to research and knowledge exchange, teaching and practice in art, design, architecture, communication and humanities. The College’s international reputation as the world's number one art and design university has been recognised for four successive years by the highly-regarded QS World Ranking survey in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2017/18 the College has 2,000 students registered for MA, MRes, MPhil and PhD degrees, rising to 2,300 in 2018/19, and more than 400 full- and part-time academic, technical and administrative staff with more than 1500 visiting professors and lecturers.

The School of Communication currently offers four MA programmes that engage with communication design on multiple levels: Animation, Digital Direction, Information Experience Design and Visual Communication. All have a strong culture of innovation, experimentation and debate, and are focused on developing and challenging practice within an environment that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and thinking, developing transferable skills and responses. Based on deep disciplinary learning with opportunities for interdisciplinary working and collaboration, the School is ideally placed to take on projects which innovate and extend practice while ensuring depth of subject expertise. Alongside this sit MRes, MPhil and PhD students, and a number of key Research and Knowledge Exchange projects with external industry partners, ensuring a rich research foundation and source for all curricula development and delivery, including across the RCA.

We are now searching for a Dean of Communication who will provide the academic leadership and operational management, vision and strategic direction of the School, particularly in linking industry, innovation and research with taught programmes, research degrees and the student experience. It is essential that candidates think dynamically and entrepreneurially about the future of design education within the School of Communication and can align and motivate staff at all levels to achieve the College’s and School’s strategic ambitions, including in the areas of scale, flexible learning, and earned income. Successful candidates will have demonstrable experience in growing and developing collaborative courses exploring the future of communication.

The new Dean will give the School a focus on new and interactive media, while maintaining its excellent reputation in existing subject areas. The successful candidate will be an internationally recognised leader in one of the School of Communication’s main disciplinary areas while also bringing excellent leadership skills required to successfully run a school, with a focus on delivery and growth.  The Dean will serve on the College’s leadership team.

The closing date is midday on Friday 4 May 2018 and interviews are expected to be held in London in late May 2018.
